Being diagnosed with fibroids can raise many questions, especially if you're trying to conceive. The good news is that not all fibroids affect fertility. It depends on their size, number, and most importantly, their location.
What Are Fibroids?
Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. They are very common in women of reproductive age and, in many cases, cause no symptoms or require no treatment.
How Can Fibroids Affect Fertility?
Some fibroids can make it more difficult to become pregnant by changing the shape of the uterine cavity, interfering with embryo implantation, or affecting the fallopian tubes. However, many women with fibroids go on to have healthy pregnancies.
Are All Fibroids the Same?
No. Submucosal fibroids, which grow inside the uterus, are the ones most likely to affect fertility.
Intramural fibroids may have an impact if they are large, while subserosal fibroids, located on the outside of the uterus, usually do not affect the chances of getting pregnant.
Do Fibroids Always Need to Be Removed?
Not always. If a fibroid is not affecting the uterine cavity or causing significant symptoms, your doctor may simply recommend regular monitoring. If it is interfering with fertility, treatment may be advised before trying to conceive or starting an IVF cycle.
When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?
It is recommended to schedule a fertility evaluation if you have been trying to conceive for some time, have been diagnosed with fibroids, or are experiencing symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or recurrent pregnancy loss.
