Does a Man’s Age Also Affect Fertility?

When people talk about fertility, most of the attention is often focused on women. However, male fertility also plays a very important role, and a man’s age can influence fertility more than many people realize.

Although men continue producing sperm throughout their lives, semen quality can decrease over time. This may be reflected in changes in sperm motility, count, and genetic quality, which can make it more difficult to achieve pregnancy or increase the time it takes to conceive.

After the age of 40, some men may experience:

  • Decreased sperm motility

  • Lower sperm count

  • Changes in genetic quality

  • Hormonal changes

  • Longer time to achieve pregnancy

But age is not the only factor. Lifestyle can also affect male fertility. Habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of sleep, chronic stress, poor nutrition, or even excessive heat exposure in the genital area can impact sperm quality.

In addition, certain medical conditions may affect fertility, including:

  • Diabetes

  • Infections

  • Hormonal disorders

  • Obesity

Many times, male factor infertility does not present obvious symptoms, which is why fertility testing can be an important step when a couple is having difficulty conceiving.

semen analysis

One of the most common tests is a semen analysis, which helps evaluate sperm count, motility, and morphology.
