Does In Vitro Fertilization Hurt? What You Should Know Before Starting

One of the most common questions among women considering In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is: Will the treatment be painful?

It's normal to feel nervous about something unfamiliar, but IVF is a process that takes place in stages. Although it may cause some discomfort, many of these symptoms are mild and temporary.

1. Ovarian Stimulation: Do the Injections Hurt?

During this first stage, hormonal medications are administered through small injections to stimulate the ovaries and encourage the development of multiple follicles.

Although the injections may cause slight discomfort, they are generally well tolerated. As the days go by, some women may experience abdominal bloating, tenderness, or a feeling of heaviness.

During this stage, the doctor performs ultrasounds and monitoring appointments to observe how the ovaries are responding and adjust the treatment when necessary.

2. Egg Retrieval: What Does It Feel Like?

This is often one of the stages that concerns patients the most, but there is something important you should know: Egg retrieval is generally performed under sedation. This allows the patient to remain comfortable and usually not feel pain during the procedure, which typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

After egg retrieval, some women may experience menstrual-like cramps, bloating, or mild abdominal discomfort that generally improves within a few days.

3. Embryo Transfer: Is It Painful?

One of the most anticipated moments of IVF!

During this procedure, the specialist carefully places the embryo inside the uterus using a very thin catheter.

The transfer is usually quick, generally does not require anesthesia, and many patients describe it as an experience similar to a routine gynecological examination.

Some may feel slight pressure or mild cramping. After the procedure, your doctor will provide instructions regarding the care and medications you should continue.

So, Should I Be Afraid to Start IVF?

Every woman experiences the treatment differently. The important thing is to understand how each stage works, know that there are ways to manage discomfort, and feel supported by a medical team that can answer your questions.💜
