Low AMH: What It Means and How to Take Action

It’s a phrase we hear often in our consultations. Many women come in worried, showing their lab results on their phone with a concerned look on their face.

And it’s understandable—searching “low AMH” online brings up terms like “diminished ovarian reserve,” “difficulty getting pregnant,” or “biological clock ticking.”How could you not be alarmed?

Take a deep breath. Let’s break it down step by step.

What is AMH?

Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is a protein produced by the small follicles in your ovaries. The level of AMH in your blood helps estimate your ovarian reserve—that is, how many potential eggs remain in your ovaries.

⚠️ Having low AMH does not mean you can't get pregnant, or that you're not ovulating. It only indicates that your ovarian reserve is lower than average.

Why Might AMH Be Low?

AMH naturally declines with age, but there are other possible causes:

·         Genetics

·         Previous ovarian surgery

·         Endometriosis

·         Medical treatments (like chemotherapy)

·         Or simply idiopathic (no known cause)

What Can I Do Now?

Here’s the good news: you have options.

  • Comprehensive evaluation. AMH alone isn’t enough to make decisions. We look at your age, ultrasound results, hormone levels, and medical history.

  • Personalized treatments. If you’re trying to conceive soon, there are specific stimulation protocols for women with low reserve.

  • Egg freezing. If you’re not ready for motherhood yet, this may be a key moment to preserve your fertility.

  • Egg donation. In cases where your own eggs don’t respond, many women still achieve pregnancy through egg donation, with high success rates.
